Controls to Ensure Safe and Efficient Production

When it comes to protecting people, the environment and equipment, John Crane Production Solutions offers a full line of products to accomplish that task. Our professionals provide the knowledge and know how to install safety systems designed to meet your needs - big or small. Products include actuators (both pneumatic and hydraulic) and bonnet adaptors designed for major brands of API 6A, API 6D, and ANSI B16.34 through conduit reverse and direct acting gate valves. These products provide the opening and closing of the valve assembly as established by predetermined pressure settings. Our actuated gate valve products are available in 1 13/16" through 4 1/16" valve sizes up to 15,000 psi pressure ranges and are suitable for both on shore and offshore use in all well conditions. Available in metal piston and diaphragm configurations, actuators can meet any application presented.

Actuation is achieved by applying a pneumatic or hydraulic pressure (as calculated for the application) to the closed cylinder which exerts force to the piston or diaphragm compressing the internal spring and stem. This movement results in opening the valve (or closing the valve in a normally open application) and allows flow (or restricting flow) through the valve. The actuated gate valve returns to its fail position (normally closed or normally open) when the supply pressure is vented.

Control System products and the strategic use of the above safety system components are vital to the operation of the safety actuated gate valve. A surface safety system including the actuated gate valve along with pressure sensors, relays, and related products work to provide a means for protecting personnel, the environment, the installation, as well as the products being produced.

Pressure sensors provide a means for programming the automatic operation of an actuated gate valve. Once the pressure sensor senses the predetermined high or low pressure limit, it will block control pressure to the actuated gate valve. The accompanying relay will then vent the actuator supply pressure to the actuator and shut-in the system. We offer a multitude of system hook-ups based on the specific application.

John Crane Production Solutions also markets a low-pressure diaphragm operated gate valve. This valve, rated at 3,000 psi provides an ideal solution for safety protection on low-pressure wellhead applications and pumping wellhead systems. Similar to conventional actuated gate valve systems, the diaphragm actuated gate valve is operated by application of control pressure to the diaphragm and is sensed by pressure sensors detecting high or low pressure or liquid level controls detecting liquid levels in tanks or surface 2 or 3 phase separators. Upon sensing the predetermined limit, the relay or liquid lever control will vent and the valve will automatically shut-in (or open in direct acting application such as casing relief). This valve has been extremely successful in pressure control and dump valve applications in coal bed methane applications on surface water and gas separators. To date there are over 2,000 of these valves in service. The through conduit valve design will allow coal fines and particulates through the valve whereas conventional motor valves tend to plug up or wash out.

Another process control system marketed by JCPS is the Solar Compressor manufactured by Lightning Industries. This unit is a small, continuous duty compressor capable of four cubic feet per minute. The compressor is controlled by a microcomputer controller that protects the battery by preventing overcharging and allows you to set the pressure of your pumping system to a maximum of 125 psi. The Solar Compressor is ideal for H2S service gas or other harsh conditions and functions just as effectively in remote areas.

For pump jacks operating off the electric grid, we offer the Pumpmatic control system. This features a drop in engine assembly with a timing device, allowing for up to 50 cycles per day without an operator. With each cycle the Pumpmatic starts the engine, warms the engine, engages the clutch, runs the timed cycle, then performs a two-minute cool down. This unit is ideal for marginal wells or could also be used for gas well dewatering. It comes with a wide range of horsepower options and has allowed installations at depths greater than 10,000 feet. JCPS has also developed an exclusive lubrication system that minimizes maintenance and enhances the life of the unit.
